German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)

The German cockroach is Brisbane's most problematic indoor cockroach species. Adults are small (12-15mm), light brown with two distinctive dark parallel stripes running from the head to the base of the wings. Despite having wings, they rarely fly.

Behaviour: German cockroaches are almost exclusively indoor pests. They congregate in warm, humid areas close to food and water sources, particularly kitchens and bathrooms. They hide in cracks, crevices, behind appliances, inside dishwasher and microwave motor housings, and around plumbing fixtures.

Reproduction: A single female produces 4-8 egg cases (oothecae) in her lifetime, each containing 30-40 eggs. This means one female can produce up to 320 offspring. A small infestation can become severe within weeks.

Treatment approach: German cockroaches require specialised treatment using gel baits placed directly into harbourage areas. Surface spraying alone is ineffective against this species as they have developed resistance to many common insecticides. Our treatment protocol targets the colony at its source.

American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

The American cockroach is the largest common cockroach species in Brisbane, growing up to 40-50mm in length. Adults are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on the back of the head. They are strong fliers in warm weather.

Behaviour: American cockroaches prefer warm, moist environments and are commonly found in subfloor areas, sewer systems, drains, and around hot water systems. They enter homes through gaps around pipes, under doors, and via drainage systems. In Brisbane, they are particularly active during warm, humid summer months.

Reproduction: Females produce approximately 150 offspring per year. While slower breeders than German cockroaches, their larger size and tendency to fly make them particularly distressing for homeowners.

Treatment approach: External perimeter spray, drain treatment, subfloor treatment, and roof void dusting. Sealing entry points around pipes and doors is also recommended to prevent re-entry.

Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae)

Despite its name, the Australian cockroach likely originated in Africa but is well-established across Queensland. Adults are 30-35mm long, dark brown with distinctive yellow margins on the thorax and yellow streaks on the outer edges of the forewings.

Behaviour: Australian cockroaches are primarily outdoor pests found in garden beds, mulch, bark, under pot plants, in retaining walls, and in woodpiles. They enter homes through gaps and cracks, particularly during heavy rain or temperature changes. They are strong fliers and are attracted to lights at night.

Reproduction: Females produce around 20-30 egg cases in their lifetime, each containing approximately 24 eggs. They prefer to deposit egg cases in moist, sheltered locations within garden debris.

Treatment approach: External perimeter treatment, garden bed spray, granule application, and sealing entry points. Internal treatment targets any individuals that have entered the property.

Step 1: Inspection & Species Identification

Our technician inspects the property to identify the cockroach species present, locate harbourage areas, assess the severity of the infestation, and identify conducive conditions such as moisture sources, food debris, and entry points. Different species require different treatment strategies, so correct identification is the foundation of effective control.

Step 2: Gel Baiting

Professional-grade cockroach gel bait is applied in small, discreet dots directly into harbourage areas: inside cabinet hinges, behind appliances, under sinks, around plumbing penetrations, and in cracks and crevices. Cockroaches feed on the bait and transfer the active ingredient to nestmates through contact, faeces, and cannibalism, creating a cascading effect that eliminates the colony. This is particularly effective for German cockroaches.

Step 3: Residual Spray Treatment

A residual insecticide is applied to external perimeters, internal skirting boards, door frames, window frames, and wet areas. This creates a long-lasting barrier that kills cockroaches on contact as they cross treated surfaces. The residual effect continues working for weeks after application, providing ongoing protection against reinfestation from external sources.

Step 4: Crack & Crevice Treatment

Using specialised application equipment, insecticide is injected directly into wall cavities, cracks in tiling, gaps around pipe penetrations, and other concealed spaces where cockroaches harbour. This reaches individuals hiding deep within the building structure that surface treatments cannot access.

Step 5: Roof Void Dusting

Professional insecticidal dust is applied throughout the roof void space. Roof voids are warm, dark, and undisturbed, making them ideal cockroach habitat. The dust adheres to cockroach bodies as they move through the space, providing long-lasting control in this difficult-to-reach area. This is effective against American and Australian cockroaches that commonly inhabit roof voids.

Step 6: External Perimeter & Garden Treatment

Granular insecticide is applied to garden beds, mulch, retaining walls, and foundation areas. External perimeter spray creates a barrier at the property boundary. This targets outdoor cockroach populations, particularly Australian cockroaches, and prevents them from migrating indoors. Reducing the external population is essential for long-term control.

Gaps around plumbing penetrations, weep holes in brick veneer, gaps under doors, and spaces around air conditioning units all provide access. Brisbane's sewer network harbours large populations of American cockroaches.
